Improving on perfection is not an easy thing to do, particularly in the cut-throat tuning world. On the outskirts of Tokyo, one man had a vision, to take something that many feel couldn’t be improved on, ignored the stereotypes and did just that – perfected it.
Arriving at the RAUH-Welt workshop at 12pm Nakai-san emerges from his man cave with a hot can of coffee in one hand and a lit cigarette in the other. Despite being lunchtime, the working day for this artist has only just kicked off, and with the rain pelting down being inside is the best place to be right now.
For some, this 911 might appear to just be a Porsche with wild aero, deep-dished wheels and a flamboyant paint job. However, when you start to delve into the creative mind of Nakai-san, you realise that you are sitting in front of a true artist in every sense of the word.
He is part tortured artist, part devout petrol head and a man of few words, his mysterious eyes as dark as the oil stains on his hands. Couple all this to his number- one build philosophy of insisting that no two cars are the same, and you can see exactly what sets this artist apart from the others.
Nakai-san has forged himself a status in the tuning world, both in Japan and globally through his attitude of ‘I don’t care what you think, I’m going ahead with it anyway’ and a passion for doing what he does.
With concepts that polarise opinion like no other Porsche on earth it is no wonder the world sat up and paid attention when these winged monsters started doing the rounds on tuning websites. RWB has so far transformed various 911 Porsche models including the 930, 964 and the 993, but these three models with varying body lines keep Nakai-san busy enough with no two builds ever taking the same path.
The build process is much like the workshop; raw, organised chaos and confusing to anyone who has never witnessed it first-hand, but Nakai-san sees everything crystal clearly. He can look at the car before even making the first cut and envision it in a completely finished state. Spending a lot of his time in the workshop, building by night, sleeping by day, nothing at RWB is done by halves.
I guess you could say that this man is so passionate about what he does that he is one of the very few that can honestly say they love their job.
With narrow Japanese streets, the 208cm-wide 993 takes up all of its own lane and a bit more. Despite the pouring rain the car grips the road well courtesy of 265/25/18 front and enormous 335/30/18 rear rubber wrapped around Brombacher wheels.
The aggressive stance demands your attention, and if there is one thing RWB Porsches stand for it is certainly stance.
At first it seems that Yves Piaget is purely designed for the street, and may be a slightly watered down version, but Nakai-san then pulled out another surprise and changed my ideas all over again. A small switch in front of the gear shifter is flicked up, and the car’s cold-air vacuum induction is engaged. The crackle of the exhaust and the licks of flame while shifting sets all your senses alight.
Even after 15 years of building cars you can see that for Nakai-san the fun and exhilaration is still as strong as ever. Nakai-san brands his RWB Porsches with the term – Sekund Entwicklung, which in German translates roughly to ‘secondary-development’. They certainly are given a new lease on life that is for sure. So where does all this inspiration come from?
Just stop and take a look around the workshop, all the details that lie within, the soothing Pandora One radio station playing in the background, the ambient light and glows of fluorescent lights littering the workshop, the sound of the rain on the roof…
It soon becomes apparent, this artist is just dripping with style and character. While standing in the RWB workshop you can’t help but feel inspired. There really is nothing like the raw, oily, mechanical presence of a RAUH-Welt Begriff Porsche. Nakai-san takes each car and reincarnates it from a purebred into a purebred with soul, which makes these cars true ‘diamonds in the RAUH’.
