Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you RWB Australia #1 – ‘Southern Cross’. Without a doubt, another stunning creation by Nakai-san. I have lost track of how many RWB Porsches I have seen in real life, but one thing I will admit is that this ranks right up there with my all time favourites.
The project was buttoned up at just on 10:30pm, and in true RWB style it was off to dinner when most would be ready for bed. Myself and Lawrence were scheduled to be at the airport just after 7am the following morning and I was stuck at a crossroads. I really wanted to head out and celebrate with Chern, Yori, Nakai-san, Christian and the rest of the ‘choir group’ (inside joke), but at the same time I had to grab some photos of the finished product.
Alvin from Auto Racing Technik, part of the amazing team where Nakai-san built the 911 volunteered to stay behind with me. For the first time the workshop was quiet. No compressors, no cutting saws, no cars coming and going outside, just pure silence. I wanted to shoot in a dimly lit scene, just a little bit of light to create shadows, and pay homage to the mancave we know and love. RWB in my mind is dark, moody, passionate, and individualistic so if the photos could capture a bit of this I would be happy.
The Work M1 wheels were the perfect choice for this build in my opinion, something about those gold centres just finish the colour combination off perfectly. The shark fin fender wings just add a sexy element to the whole rear end. Curvier than an Aussie supermodel she is!
The one thing about this 911 is it will grab your eyeballs and abuse them whether you like it or not. Let’s face it, when we were all young (and some even now) we wanted to own a flamboyant racecar that you can drive on the street. This is exactly that, it is like having a polar bear as a pet but it WON’T rip your head off.
Yet when you see it rolling down the street it has all the grace of a monarch butterfly at the same time. That is the great thing about RWB Porsches, they are at home in a greasy pit garage at the local race track, or sitting in front of the casino at Monte Carlo.
I can already imagine Southern Cross cruising along the central streets of Melbourne, snapping necks and causing accidents at every intersection it passes through.
But for a minute I want to change the view and look at things from another angle. As much as I have had a blast following my first build from the first cut to the final peeling of the window banner, I have to admit that ‘Southern Cross’ itself was overshadowed by something else.
That something else is the people who were there, and all played a part in the build. Prior to the build these people were just a Facebook profile, and some I had never heard of. Yet through the magic of RWB, Nakai-san has brought yet another group of people together, and after only 72 hours it feels like we have known each other for years.
I could ramble on about the incredible offsets of the wheels, (F:18×10.5 -17 & R:18×13 -61), and the other nitty gritty specs, but with a view like this sitting in front of your eyes the best thing to do is just enjoy it.
Southern Cross is wider, lower, and more visually vibrant than anything else I saw in Melbourne. RWB is a polarising style of tuning, and not everyone gets it. I remember what Nakai-san told me the first time I met him. ‘I have never been influenced by peoples opinions, I did exactly what I wanted, I am influenced only by my own love of driving cars. This is why my Porsches are how they are’.
To wind things up, I would like to throw out a huge shoutout to everyone who was at the build. Chern & Yori, Nakai-san, Ray, Alvin (pictured), Christian & Jack, Lawrence, Bao, all the photographers (you know who you are!), Jasmine, Shen, and anyone else I may have missed out.
